Looking for other team members?
IMO, Rotuma would be a lot better, given the 2009 operation from Conway Reef.
I do hope it will stay Conway, because I didn’t contact last operation, and I worked Rotuma before.
Some statistics:
In the DX magazine survey Rotuma is at 47, Conway is at 56.
In Clublog Conway is at 41, Rotuma at 32.
For IOTA 61,7% has Rotuma confirmed, with 25 activations/callsigns.
50,1% has Conway Reef confirmed, with 11 activations/callsigns.
Rotuma’s population is 2,000, Conway is uninhabited.
Let’s hope for a good operation ! (activating both would be a real challenge!)
Hi Team,
Good luck as the HARAOA Team have pulled out of doing joint 3D2R because of death of our good friend 3D2AA Aisea. We are doing Lord Howe Island July 2011 http://www.vk9hr.com so good luck to Hrani and team and we hope to work you all .
Best Regards Tommy vk2ir
Actually it doesn’t matter where you go – the pile-ups will be the same size.
Consider the fact, that around 90% of the QSO’s will be with the same people that have both entities already confirmed in most band-mode slots.
OK, there will a small number of those who desperately need Conway or Rotuma for a completely new one, but they will be only successful, if they have upgraded their station to be semi-big guns.
So depending whether you like it a little bit more adventurous, then choose the tent and generator location – Conway. Or if you like to have some infrastructure, then go to Rotuma.
Your fun at being at the other end of the pile-up will be the same.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think that the “26 band-mode-slot”-DX’ers give an adequate contribution, compared to the lucky guy who worked you for a completely new one.
But nowadays, the only thing that counts is the total number of QSO’s for a DXpedition.
And the habit of working EVERY DXpedition again and again on as many as possible band-mode-slots has reached many many “DX’ers”, including some very well-known calls.
In his book “The Complete DX’er”, Bob Locher, W9KNI, wrote
“I don’t need that one for a new one, so I give the others a chance”. But meanwhile that is a fairytale from some time ago.
Just my two cents – or food for thought …

I forget to mention, SIX days of actual operation used to be a reasonable time span in the 70′s and 80′s, when you were there to give the DESERVING a NEW ONE.
But with Leaderboard & Co., you need to operate at least two weeks.
First week to build up your QSO number for the record book and to work all the slot-people, and second week to possibly give out a new one to one of the deserving …
This is not against Club Log with all it’s helpful tools, but Leaderboard is forcing additional (unneeded) competition.
In the old days, each country and state had their handful of egocentrics which needed to work each and every DXpedition on all bands and modes.

Well said Gary. The band-slot mania is tiresome. The best DX contest stations are working the DX-pedition repeatedly.
