VK7DI: Deal Island, OC-195 (Furneaux Group)

UPDATE by Luke VK3HJ – Expedition postponed!

We set out Saturday morning on a forecast promising moderating conditions. The forecast 1.5m waves was encouraging, but on entering Bass Strait, we encountered confused seas with 6m waves. Battling this for some time, and seeing worsening conditions ahead, we chose to turn around. The forecast was not looking promising for the next few days, and some of crew had work commitments looming, making the timeline too tight to attempt to continue the expedition.

Bass Strait is one of the most treacherous stretches of water in the world, and during the week as we waited there were reports of a missing vessel, and a container ship had lost containers overboard. So, the decision was made to reschedule the expedition to later in the year, possibly October. The team is all home safely now, and we look forward to realising the dream later. The only way onto Deal Is is by sea, so we must respect the natural forces and make this trip when She is ready!

Les VK3MLM, Peter VK3ADO, Mark VK3FMGF, Lino VK3EI, Luke VK3HJ and John VK3DQ plan to be active from Deal Island, OC-195 starting approx March 28th.

Operations on HF will be CW, SSB and SSTV – up to three stations at any one time.

The team will be located at Garden Cove which is located on the north side of Deal Island. Power will consist of a number of batteries with both solar charging and a small generator set.
